Islamabad Transport Guide

By Air

The Islamabad International Airport (ISB) is considered the major gateway for traffic into Pakistan. It connects with major destinations around the world and is served by several airlines. Many international airlines operate regular flights to and from Islamabad international airport.

By Road

There is a reasonably good highway network between the major cities. An hourly bus service runs the Lahore-Rawalpindi-Peshawar Route. Advanced bookings are recommended. Cars can be hired at major hotels and at the Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad airports. An international driving permit is required and traffic travels on the left.

Inside Islamabad

Islamabad has widely connected public transport; the taxis are the best bet, since you get them everywhere and the average fare is less than $2. As in the rest of South Asia, you have to be careful on the road. Traffic rules are seldom observed and various kinds of vehicles - bicycles, cars and buses - along with pedestrians compete for space on roads.

Bus

The most popular form of Islamabad transportation is the public bus transport network. The various operators, with varying degree of services and luxury, offer a means of exploring Islamabad and the country as a whole.

Taxi

With a minimum fare of around 35 cents, taxis are a viable option to move around Islamabad and its twin city Rawalpindi. The fare between the two cities (one way) is approximately $ 2.6. Taxis lack trip meters, and many are old cars in shabby condition and lacking air conditioning. You must bargain before embarking on a journey.

Pedestrian

It is a good idea to walk your way around the Inner City area and explore it. However, on the whole, tourists prefer to take some mode of transport because of the distances involved.

On the Road - Tips

- Cycling is not a good option for tourists
- Taxis are safe and relatively inexpensive
- Always settle the fare with the taxi driver before embarking on a journey
